RANCHI: At a time when there is much a hullaballoo about health implications of fast food items, team of experts from hotel management and catering technology department of Birla Institute of Technology Mesra tried busting the myth by proving that bakery items if cooked at home with healthy ingredients could be good for health.

To help common people learn the basics of preparing bakery items at home the department organized a ten-day bake and take workshop in the department. The department started organizing such workshops for amateur cooks couple of years back so that people can make use of vacation and also understand the application of culinary skills.

"We organised it in 2011 for the first time and got warm response because people are interested in learning new skills but fail to do so due to lack of proper equipments and facilities which is available with the department," said Rajesh Langia chief chef and trainer of the workshop.

Assistant professor in the department Nishikant Kumar said ten people attended the workshop to learn 19 bakery items. "While housewives learnt how to make optimum use of their ovens some of the participants had business in mind," he said. The participants learnt the art of making cakes, chocolates, rolls, Pizza, cookies, pastry and other delectable items.

On the sidelines of the workshop, the department also intended to create awareness about the courses available in the institute, in this regard. Sources in the department said that the seats available with the department are not filled up because of lack of awareness among masses how course in hotel management not just makes candidates suitable for the industry but could be helpful for those who run their own business or are planning to start something.
